Sweaty Kids Film Festival

Sweaty Kids Film Festival celebrates the unpolished brilliance of Gunnison Valley locals — showcasing the unprofessional athletic and artistic talent of our community while remaining entirely unserious. Come watch an eclectic mix of outdoor “edits” (mini-movies) representing the sportsperson’s paradise that is the Gunnison Valley. Cheer on your friends, raise a glass, enter the legendary raffle, and revel in the delightful chaos of community-fueled creativity.
We don’t give awards. We don’t filter submissions. We just enjoy all the weird, wild, and wonderful things our valley’s troublemakers are up to. The only thing we ask is that you keep your submission below 5 minutes.
Make your own edit — any way you want, any length you want, any rating you want. All ages, all sports, and all experience levels are encouraged!
History
In the winter of 2019, Majestic co-founders Carrie and Conrad were just hourly employees looking for a way to get their friends’ season edits up on the big screen. After asking their bosses for permission, Sweaty Kids was conceived. Roughly 50 people attended the first festival on October 11, 2019.
A lot of people ask us – what’s with the name? Well, like the event, we wanted the name of our festival to not take itself too seriously. We thought “sweaty” captured the idea that edits could be of absolutely anything you put effort into – and “kids” seemed right for our community that suffers from a bit of Peter Pan syndrome. Also, co-founder Carrie was an abnormally sweaty child- to the point where her sisters called her “Jaba the Hut” for many years.
The team was stoked to host Sweaty Kids again, but in March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the Majestic indefinitely. When Carrie and Conrad decided to start a nonprofit and fundraise to reopen the Majestic, Sweaty Kids was re-imagined as a fundraiser for the cause. They approached the Center for the Arts and made plans to host Sweaty Kids in their newly built auditorium on November 20th, 2020. Due to increasing COVID numbers, the team was forced to pivot and turn the event into a livestream just three days before! Thanks to the generosity of Wade Koeman and the Public House, the show went on and the team live streamed the second ever Sweaty Kids from the Public House Basement, complete with special musical guest Celestine!
In 2021, Carrie and Conrad were working at the Center for the Arts, while fundraising to reopen the Majestic in their spare time. They took this opportunity to bring the third ever Sweaty Kids Film Festival to the Steddy Theater on December 2, 2021 and SOLD OUT the live event – just about 400 tickets. Celestine performed live and Marty McGrane designed his first poster for us! This was our first Sweaty Kids with a raffle, benefitting the Paden Castles Kelley Scholarship Foundation through Crested Butte Snowsports Foundation.
Since reopening the Majestic in September 2022, Sweaty Kids has returned to regular live showings at it’s birthplace. In true Sweaty Kids fashion, we have never been able to keep to a regular schedule.
